Metroplex Monday
You can read my write ups for Pegasus News here and here. I recorded the UNT game and caught a little over a half of it on Sunday afternoon to see why that got blasted 42-10 at home. Obviously, I did not see the SMU game, but, despite the interceptions, it looked like they didn’t play to badly and kept the game within reach going in to the fourth quarter which is not bad when you have crossed a time zone to play on the road.
UNT
What can I say about the Mean Green? If Coach Todd Dodge calls this Todd for advice, I’d tell him to recruit speed for next year. Florida International was faster that UNT, it seemed, at every position. Most telling was FIU’s defensive line. The UNT offensive line just couldn’t stop the penetration. QB Giovanni Vizza was under pressure the whole night. UNT needs to find some speed for its defensive front seven as they didn’t get a whole lot of penetration on their side of the ball. The other place where you could see the speed difference was T. Y. Hilton. He juked and raced through the UNT secondary to 145 yards on 3 catches. When you run the type of four wide receiver kind of spread offense that Dodge runs at UNT, there is a tendancy to find speed for the offensive side of the ball. However, Dodge needs to find some speed on the defensive side of the ball too. And, they need to find some offensive linemen who can handle that kind of speed which FIU brought with their front seven. One plus for UNT is they can run the football
SMU
I can’t say much about the Mustangs. I noticed that they won most of the statistical categories which you would think would translate into a win. However, SMU QB Bo Levi Mitchell threw 3 INT’s, although it only seemed to lead to one real TD for Central Florida. SMU is still struggling to stop the run and run the football themselves. However, in the Run and Shoot, running the football is done in terms of screens and quick tosses to the running back which don’t show up as runs in the stats. I think that the fact they went on the road, crossing a time zone, and competed well through the fourth quarter was a good sign for SMU.
TCU
The Horned Frogs defense was dominant against San Diego State’s offense. SDSU averaged 303 yards passing per game, but TCU held them to 98 yards. On the first play from scrimmage, DE Jerry Hughes blew by the right tackle and sacked the Aztec QB for a 8 yard loss. It was that kind of night for the Aztec offense. TCU even knocked the first string QB out of the game. On offense, it was TCU running as usual. The Frogs made use of the option as QB Marcus Jackson rushed for 131 yards on 27 carries and 2 TD’s. The Frogs had too many penalties that killed drives or caused them to settle for FG’s. Just a note, Aaron Brown is looking like the Aaron Brown of old, and just in time. Also, the Frogs have a package on offense where they line up WR Jeremy Kerley at QB out of the shotgun and run the “zone read.” Coach Patterson said after the game that they had a lot more and would be using it more. I have decided to call the package the “wild frog.”
What are they saying?
