Top Ten Football Movies

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

OK, I admit it, the title was a little bit of a tease.  I have an idea for the spring here at CFTT, and I need your help.  I want to create the top ten football movies of all time list.  Now, I know that is a daunting task, but I believe in my friends and readers at CFTT.Premiere Of Weinstein Companys The Longshots - Arrivals

I have started by brainstorming as many movies as I possibly could.  I got help from my friend Lee Cochenour of Celebrity Book Signings and my friend at the Chili’s on University Drive in Fort Worth.

I will start by compiling a list, as many as I can come up with.  Then, we will vote on the movies.  Then, I will seed the movies for a tournament based on the number of votes each movie received.  We will then pair off the movies in a tournament format narrowing it down to the final two where one movie will be declared the top football movie of all time.

During the process, we will identify the top ten movies.

I had help compiling the list from these sites:  www.bostonbaseball.com and www.sportsinmovies.com.

Here are the movies thus far.

If I missed a movie you think should be considered, send me an email, or respond in the comments.  Thanks.

I will give everyone time to check out the movies (not literally) and decide which ones they like.  Next week, we will begin collecting votes for the movies.  The following week I will announce votes, etc.  and begin pairing off movies for the tournament.

I’m Back

I apologize and beg your pardon.  I have been busy securing my new site, dfwfootball.net.  Never fear, I will not stop updating Collegefootballtopten.com.  Alas, there will be some changes to CFTT.  I will, however, be pondering the direction of CFTT as dfwfootball.net is now my main work.

Changes to CFTT include a new theme.  The theme is Mimbo v. 3.0  designed by Darren Hoyt.   Darren has become my new favorite theme designer.  The theme is specifically designed with the look and feel of a magazine.  This should make some of my feature areas of the blog easier to find.  I also use one of the older Mimbo themes for dfwfootball.net.

I will focus more on fun and humor in my writing here at CFTT.  I do plan on running the DFW Pickem in the fall once again.  We had a lot of fun and it was helpful in establishing traffic at my site.

There will be no more Dallas-Fort Worth football at CFTT.  That is because I have moved all of that to dfwfootball.net.  I might occasionally mention one of the three DFW teams in the course of my blogging.  TCU became very relevant at the end of the year last season finishing number 7 in the final BCS poll.  However, if you are looking for a press release or any particular news, I encourage you to mark dfwfootball.net in your browser bookmarks.

There will be direct advertising opportunities.  I will continue to use Yardbarker and Google Ads, however, I am going to offer a cross site package of advertising which will include dfwfootball.net and other future website projects.  This will help advertisers be able take advantage of the most traffic possible.

Survey

I have been contacted by a marketing firm who is conducting a survey for Versus.  They are trying to improve their coverage of college football, and we can help!

Many of my readers are TCU fans who plays in, of course, the Mountain West Conference.  The MWC puts several of its games on Versus.  Do you remember the TCU/ Utah game?  Well, that game was played on Versus.

Fans are always looking for the chance to impact the big picture.  Here is our chance!  Just follow the link below and take the survey.  The survey takes about 5 minutes, maybe.  The questions are pretty simple to asnwer, you won’t hurt your brains!

Hopefully, for MWC fans, and for the fans looking for the best games, Versus will be picked up by more cable companies next year.

Thanks

I Have Been Tagged

Thomas from Mean Green Cougar Red saw some reason to “tag” me.  I am supposed to come up with seven facts about me, I think.

1.  I grew up in Batesville, AR.  Batesville is the hometown of Mark Martin, the great NASCAR driver.  I actually watched him race as a kid when my dad did the PA announcing.  I love dirt racing thanks to all of this.  Today, Batesville is home to one of the best dirt late model racers in the country as well as one of the best dirt late model race car builders.

2.  Because I grew up in Arkanasas, I am a huge Razorback fan.  I got to see the Hogs play as a kid, and I became hooked.  I cheer the Razorbacks, and I enjoyed watching the basketball team upset Texas a couple weeks ago on TV.  I don’t get to see the Hogs play often, so I am grateful when I do.

3.  I am a licensed Baptist minister, for what it’s worth.  I actually came to Fort Worth to go to school at Southwestern Baptist Seminary.  Life happened.  I can’t spend an entire blog explaining the kind of health problems that I have had over the last 12 years, but it has led to several surgeries, including one in San Francisco.

4.  I did play football.  I was a starter on my 9th grade football team, most of the year.  I played right tackle.  I didn’t start in high school, but I did play some.  The college where I graduated does not have a football team.  Well, they actually have a soccer team; does that count?

5.  I am crazy about my brother’s kids.  I don’t get to see them enough.  His oldest is now a teenager, and I follow his athletic exploits as much as I can.  The two girls are absolutely a treasure.  The oldest girl gives me the scoop on everyone in the family.  The youngest girl has began to become her own person, very artistic and introverted (compared to her sister anyway!).

6.  I love cats.  I always have.  That’s not to say that I don’t like dogs, but I have always been a cat guy.  I think I like to play with them and how they will cuddle with you, most of the time.  Our cat is the prettiest cat in the whole world!  Life would be much more boring with her.

7.  I have become a coffee snob.  I can’t just have Foldgers or Maxwell House anymore, although I like their commercials.  I have to have Peets (I go to Tom Thumb just to buy it) and now a new roastery for me, Aduro.  Aduro is a Fort Worth roastery and you can buy coffee from their website.

I am going to tag Harry Miers over at GoMeanGreen.com, John at Nebraska Sports Journal, Finch at SpitBloodTCU, Brian at IntheBleachers.net, Seth at Double T Nation, Kevin at Fanblogs.com, and Eddie at The Red Zone Report.  Consider yourself tagged.

Book Review of Mac Engel’s Texas Stadium

Now, normally, as you know, I do book reviews at

Mac Engel's book Texas Stadium

Mac Engel's book Texas Stadium

Collegefootballtopten.com.  It is a little bit of a niche that I have that few other college football bloggers have.  I am proud of that.

Today (1/24/09), I posted a book review of Mac Engel’s Texas Stadium at Pegasus News.  I got to meet Mac a year ago December when he did a signing of his Tony Romo book, Tony Romo: America’s Next Quarterback, at the bookstore where I work.  I really enjoyed visiting with him.  Mac is the Dallas Cowboys beat writer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and an adjunct professor for TCU’s Bob Schieffer School of Journalism.

This past fall, Mac released a book that recalls the history of Texas Stadium.  As you know, Texas Stadium will no longer be the home for the Dallas Cowboys.  The Cowboys are headed for their new stadium in Arlington, TX.

If you are a die-hard fan, or just someone who appreciates the impact that “America’s Team” has made on the country as well as Dallas-Fort Worth, I urge you to browse on over to my bookstore and purchase a copy of Mac’s book Texas Stadium.

By the way, I launched a new website that will cover football in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  So far, it is a “soft launch.”  I intend to do an “official” launch sometime in February.  I will let readers here at CFTT know when that launch takes place.  There will be prizes, so stay tuned.  The domain for the new site is www.dfwfootball.net.

2008 Year End Awards

I started my Year End Awards last year.  It is this blog’s attempt to identify some of the top players and coaches in college football.

Offensive Player of the Year
Colt McCoy, Texas

Few people were more important to their offense as McCoy was to Texas’.  McCoy’s ability to use the run made the “zone read” play that much more effective and Colt responded with a huge season both running and passing.  McCoy had a 173.36 QB Rating completing 34 touchdowns against only 8 interceptions and 3,859 yards passing.  McCoy also had 579 yards rushing.

Defensive Player of the Year
Jerry Hughes, TCU

Hughes came out of nowhere replacing former starter Chase Ortiz for the Horned Frogs.  His speed in the pass rush can be attributed to his natural athleticism as he was a running back in high school.  Hughes led the nation in sacks with 15 for a total loss of 113 yards and might have been the most high profile player for TCU’s number one ranked defense in spite of the Frogs having such stand-outs as Jason Phillips and Stephen Hodge.  But sacks weren’t Hughes’ only specialty. Hughes also forced 6 fumbles and recovered 3 fumbles.

Coach of the Year
Turner Gill, Buffalo

The former Nebraska stand-out QB has turned around the Bull program in just a few short years.  His first year at Buffalo, in 2006, Gill’s team was 2-10.  In his second year they were 5-7.  This year, Gill’s third, the Bulls finished the season 8-5 with a MAC Championship thanks to an upset of undefeated Ball State in the MAC Championship Game.

Most Inspirational Player
Myron Rolle, Florida State

Rolle won a Rhodes Scholarship during the 2008 season while helping the Seminoles to a tie of the ACC Atlantic Division Title.  Rolle has became a role-model for student athletes everywhere with his extreme dedication to his education and his team at the same time.  Now, he has followed that up with choosing to study at Oxford per the scholarship rather than play in the NFL.

Herschel Walker, Drew Pearson to Sign Books

Herschel Walker and Drew Pearson will sign copies of books which they have authored on January 17, 2009.

Walker, the former Georgia Bulldog and Dallas Cowboy, will be signing copies of his book Breaking Free at the Lifeway Christian Bookstore in at Dallas Parkway at 11 AM. This is correction of a previous post I made in which I noted the date as January 7th.

Pearson, the former Cowboy great, will be signing copies of his book Remembering Texas Stadium at the Barnes & Noble in Fort Worth on University Drive at 2 PM.

In addition, Bob Lilly will be signing copies of his book A Cowboy’s Life on January 11th, 1 PM at the Sam’s Club in Irving at Marketplace Blvd.

CFTT Top Ten Final Update

The college football season is over.  It was completed last night in a slug-fest in Miami for the “mythological,” the coach’s, or whomever else agrees to

FedEx BCS National Championship Game - Oklahoma v Florida

crown them, BCS National Championship Game.  Florida got the win.  Now, being a blogger, I am not obligated to vote for Florida as my number one team.  How will I go?  Well, here it is.

1.  Florida, 13-1
I believe in Tebow.  It’s that simple.  I belive that Tebow can literally “will” his team to victory even if they aren’t playing that great.  No team will try harder, play harder, prepare harder (you get the picture) than Tebow and Company.  He said it!

2.  USC, 12-1
The Trojans had the most impressive performance in a bowl game.  They might even be the best team.  They just hate going to Corvallis (Oregon that is).

3.  Utah, 13-0
The Utes did everything that anyone could ask them to do.  Their schedule even played out nicely as they got to knock off four ranked teams.  And, they showed they could play physical when they lined up and went toe-to-toe with Alabama.  I wonder what would have happened if Brian Johnson hadn’t have led them to that touchdown against TCU in Salt Lake City?

4.  Tie, Texas 12-1 and Oklahoma 12-2
Texas was less than impressive in the Fiesta Bowl against an offensively challenged Ohio State and Oklahoma gave away the national title game by twice failing to score in the red zone against Florida.  Oh yeah, the Sooners who routed Texas Tech lost to the Longhorns on a neutral field in October.  I can’t make up my mind!

6.  Alabama, 12-2
The Tide is good.  They are much better than people thought they would be this year.  Their only losses were to Tebow (and Co.) and Brian Johnson’s Utah Utes.

7.  TCU, 11-2
The TCU is a tail of  “what if?”  They knocked off previously unbeated Boise State in the Poinsettia Bowl, but they just missed (field goals) on their chance against Utah in Salt Lake City.  Their defense finished the year number one overall.  Before Florida’s ultimate slow-down of Oklahoma’s offense, no one other than Texas even came close to having an answer for the Sooners than the Frogs did.

8.  Georgia, 10-3
What was supposed to be a magical coming-out season for the Georgia faithful ended taking a detour.  The ‘Dawgs may have been a victim of too much “hype” and not qute enough wins.  Oh well, there is always next year.

9.  Penn State, 11-2
The Nittany Lions were over-matched against USC, but they showed everyone that they did not give up easily and play the entire game.  The game wasn’t as close as the score, but Jo Pa’s team never quit.

10.  Boise State, 12-1
The Broncos won everything their schedule threw at them.  Unfortunately, they weren’t quite ready for the Horned Frogs.  They did show that they had a good defense to complement the explosive offense.

Gameplanning the BCS Title Game

I love to read other bloggers as we all get ready for the BCS Title Game.  I have to give kudos to The Wiz for his post which lists the predictions of different writers in the sports world.  Check out his prediction post.

FedEx BCS Head Coaches Press Conference

The Wiz also has an article written by Wendell Barnhouse who used to be a writer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and now writes for Big12sports.com.  Barnhouse addresses all of the numbers and motivations and other interesting tidbits for the big game.

You can also check out the Fanblogs post.  Also, Adam at Inthebleachers.net posted his thoughts following the ITB Podcast.  I think we all want to see a good game not another SEC blowout.  Of course, some Oklahoma fans have already claimed a national championship.  I think “Superman” will have something to say about that.
