Top Ten Things I’m Thankful for Part II

continued form part I

Conway

I moved to Conway, AR this past year. Have you heard of it? It’s claim to fame, right now, is American Idol winner Kris Allen. They love Kris! However, this town has so much more! Kris is a product of this town, a town of talented, creative and honest people. There are three, very good, colleges here and, I think that adds to the productivity of this bustling city.

Coffee

I need it, and I love it. Computer programmers, website designers and many others depend on the boost they get from coffee, and there is nothing better, it seems, when it is a fresh cup of recently roasted coffee from an independent coffee shop. I have two that I love. Caffe di Angeli in Fort Worth, TX and Guillermo’s in Little Rock, AR. Otherwise, I just go to Starbucks.

Income

Income is great! It helps us pay for bills and buy Christmas presents. It’s easier to get by when you have one!

Christmas/Fall

Unequivocally, it’s my favorite time of the year. I love the Folger’s commercial of the guy coming home from college or wherever, and making the coffee to which everyone wakes up to. I don’t care much for Folders, but the commercial embodies the holidays. . . . . families being together.

Computers

I may love computers too much, but I am making up for not being near computers for nearly 25 years. Of course I was near computers, but not to the extent that today’s society demands. I didn’t own a computer, but I can make wonderful use of a computer now. I build websites, I search for information, I edit pictures, and I can make purchases. It is the backbone of my livelihood.

Art

I still have the appreciation for art. I draw on computers, mostly, now. I can still remember all of the drawing I did as a kid, and I realize I should probably do a little more of that as a stress reliever. I am still inspired by my high school art teacher, Aline McCracken. She is still an active artist 20 years later! Sometimes, she shares with her Facebook friends. I am honored!

Basics

There are basics to life. Water, air, a place to sleep, all those things. I have them, and I am grateful. I am even grateful for my 1996 Ford Taurus which I had to have in the shop this past week. I would consider that a basic, though I know it’s not really a basic. Mostly, I am thankful to have a place to sleep and that it is inside!

Remember, feel free to share your top ten things you are thankful for in the comments box!
Happy Thanksgiving from CFTT!

Top Ten Things I’m Thankful for Part I

It is a tradition at CFTT. I list the top ten things I am thankful for. So, here is my list. Feel free to create your own and include it in the comments.

By the way, this is in no particular order.

Family

If you don’t have a good family, I am sorry. Mine isn’t perfect, but they have proven much in the past year. I am glad to be near them again and get be a part of the lives of my nephew and two nieces. The holiday season will be much better this year!

Churchonechurch logo

I could include my faith here, but it is strained at the time being. It is church that keeps me from falling away. The folks at the church where I am a member embrace me and help me to hang on. Most churches are like this, but, as churches, we need to be more loving to our own and accept that life is hard for our members and we just need to be hugged! And loved.

Friends

Sometimes I complain that I don’t have any. I do. There are different kinds. There are friends from Texas where I lived for 13 years. There are new friends in Conway, AR, where I live now. There are friends from high school and college and there are “virtual friend” from my social networking online.

From Texas, there are friends like Lester Meriwether and Alex Martinez. Lester runs a faith-based literacy education ministry. He is a terrific example of a friend who cares for others as well as his wonderful family.

Alex is a salesman, but don’t let the fool you. He is an honest guy who cares for his family, his church and his friends. He and his wife Diana are big supporters of their church as well as the DFW Avengers semi-pro football team.

I have reconnected with old friends from my hometown like Robert Treadway. In spite of his struggles the past 20+ years, Robert is making his way and poised to write some future country hits. His tenacity is contagious.

I have new friends like Cotton Rohrschieb and the guys at Conway Co-Work. I look up to them in design techniques and value their friendship. Cotton isn’t just a great website designer, but he is also the “life of the party.” I don’t know anyone who has as many funny stories (usually of himself!) to tell at a moment’s notice.

Finally, there are my “virtual friends” such as John Boehler. John runs the Nebraska Sports Journal. He is an avid reader, a man of faith, a father and a huge sports fan, especially in all things Nebraska related. I have enjoyed knowing John throughout the past couple of years.

Part II is tomorrow

The BCS will jump for joy if Oregon and Auburn win out

Not much happened this week.  It was pretty anti-climatic.  Therefore, our top ten remains, almost unchanged.

1. TCU/Boise State–Boise rolls again, TCU was off.  Boise has a statement game this week.

3.  Oregon

4.  Auburn

5.  LSU–The Tigers face the Hogs in Little Rock for a trip to the Sugar Bowl.

6.  Wisconsin

7.  Stanford

8.  Ohio State

9.  Nebraska

10.  Alabama

leecoke’s picks is Lee Cochenour from Fort Worth, TX and he won week 11 in the CFTT Pickem this week with a 8-2 record, a full two wins over the nearest challenger. The win puts Lee in a tie for second place overall with Card’s Nest.

AL’s picks finished second securing the top overall spot by a mere two points over Card’s Nest and leecoke’s picks.  The finish in the final three weeks will be dramatic as these three will be playing for the top prize.  Last year’s winner, georgehr3′s picks, is only 14 points behind AL’s picks and will need a big push in the final three weeks to repeat.

Week 5 CFTT Top Ten

I am tempted to just leave my top ten the same as last week, but where’s the fun in that?  Everyone essentially won the games they were supposed to, although there were some mid-November struggles.  It gets tougher the later the year.

The pollsters seem to think a big win by Boise State at Idaho was more impressive than a close win for TCU at home to San Diego State.  If you think that, then you haven’t been paying attention.

San Diego is two close, controversial calls away from having just one loss on the season, to TCU.  They loss at BYU on a very controversial call and dopped one at Missouri (also where Oklahoma lost) on a controversial call.  San Diego, and Utah too, are clearly better teams than Idaho in spite of Utah’s ugly loss at Notre Dame.

Boise has Fresno and Nevada coming up.  Fresno and Nevada are the toughest games for Boise this year.  What happens if they struggle with either of those teams or even lose?  I guess the pollsters will move TCU back up.  Madness.

1.  TCU–The Frogs took San Diego’s best shot, and lived another day.

2.  Boise–The Broncos took care of business.  The real test is the next two weeks.

3.  Oregon–The Ducks started slow and then answered for a close win at Cal.  I think Cal read my article!

4.  Auburn–They only thing that can stop Cam Newton is allegations.  They won’t be answered until the season is over.  The Tigers have one shot to avenge 2004.

5.  LSU–The Tigers won a scrimmage.

6.  Wisconsin–Do the Badgers really play in the Big 10(11)?  How does anyone in the Big 10(11) score 83 points?  Crazy!

7.  Stanford–They keep winning.

8.  Ohio State–The Buckeyes have too much talent to stay down.

9.  Nebraska–The Cornhuskers do what it takes to win, unless it is against Texas.

10.  Alabama–The Crimson Tide looks like Alabama again.  This team just doesn’t have last year’s “killer instinct.”  They’re still good.

Top Ten Ways Cal can Stop Oregon’s Blur

This weekend, the Cal Bears will take there turn at trying to slow down Oregon’s Blur Offense.  No one else has even come close as Oregon has averaged 54.7 points per game.  Not once this season has Oregon scored less than 42 points.  Not once!

As a result, we here at CFTT have decided to give Cal a few tips on how to stop this offensive quack attack.

Book Review: The Champion

The Champion: Finding the Most Valuable Person in Your Network
Frank Agin & Jim Ballard

The Champion by Agin and BallardHave you ever looked for that book that can be a “game changer” for your business and networking? Well, this book is that book. If you are struggling with your attempts at networking, Frank Agin and Jim Ballard’s little book will give you insights through the parable they tell to improve your networking skills.

In the story, our protagonist, Jerry, looks for a “champion” networker. Jerry looks for that one person who has the contacts and the ability to take his business to the next level. Jerry gets a good idea of what his “champion” looks like after visiting with his new friend Walter.

Following a networking conference in which Jerry gets a handful of cards, his vehicle breaks down, he gets drenched in the rain helping Walter clean up his new restaurant, and a storm knocks the power thwarting the ability to email follow up notes. The next morning, Jerry comes down with a horrible cold. Suddenly, Jerry’s attempt at finding a “champion” is in jeopardy.

How can Jerry find his “champion” when he has so many obstacles? Does he find his “champion?” Well, you have to read the story to find out, but it is not very long. One can read the book in one sitting, however, the message is powerful.

We all are looking for someone like the “champion” that Jerry was looking for. We understand that making the right connection with the right person can take our businesses to another level, giving us the freedom and financial security that comes with a high performing company. The lessons Jerry learns are lessons we can apply to our lives as well.

Style Points Matter in November

FORT WORTH, TX - OCTOBER 23: Head coach Gary Patterson of the TCU Horned Frogs leads his team on the field against the Air Force Falcons at Amon G. Carter Stadium on October 23, 2010 in Fort Worth, Texas. TCU beat Air Force 38-7. (Photo by Tom Pennington/Getty Images)

Shortly after the SMU game last month, some questioned whether or not TCU had done enough to get much-needed respect in the polls. Style points were needed they said. TCU struggled early before pulling away late against a gritty SMU team.

Not everyone agrees.  It’s just not TCU coach Gary Patterson’s style.
