Live Blogging: TCU vs. BYU

The TCU/BYU game starts in just a few minutes.  I am anxious to see it get underway.  This is the first time in a while that two ranked teams have played at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth.  The last time, TCU beat Texas Tech in 2006.  Hopefully, that will be the result tonight.

I posted that I expect to see TCU use the “wild frog” tonight.  I am curious to see how it gets used.  The timing of using such a “change up” makes all the difference.  How and when does Coach Shulz use the “wild frog” will be of a great interest to me.

How does TCU win?

Well, TCU needs to do what TCU does best.  They need to hold on to the ball for 36 plus minutes keeping Max Hall on the sideline along with his offense.  They need to mix up the play calling using a balance of run and pass, but they really need to rush for many many, yards.  I think they use Ryan Christian and Aaron Brown early and often to complement QB Andy Dalton in the running game with their zone reads, etc.  Then, in the second half, look for TCU to bring in Joseph Turner to wear down the the BYU defense.  Turner will also get the ball, out of the I formation, in the red zone because Turner is “Mr. Touchdown.”  On defense, they need to get in Max Hall’s face and hurry, sack, and knock him down.  I don’t think Hall is as good as Sam Bradford, so if they get to him, it should make a difference.  Also, the TCU defense needs to keep running back Harvey Unga from getting going by holding him and his mates to low rushing yardage.  If they do that, BYU will become one dimensional.

TCU has broken out the “black shirts.”  How does that effect the game?  We’ll see.

Live Blogging: Turner in Again

Logan Turner is in the game again for SMU and has 3 completions.  He is getting some work late in a game that is out of hand.  Also, a TE made an appearance.  I didn’t know SMU had TE’s.

Live Blogging: End of the 3rd

At the end of the 3rd quarter, Rice leads 56-20.  Rice has taken advantage of of 4 turnovers including a fumble recovery and an interception by Junior DB Andrew Sendejo.   Rice QB Chase Clement has been spectacular.  He is 23 for 35 for 251 yards and 6 TD passes and 12 rushes for 73 yards.  That’s 324 total yards.  Rice WR Jarett Dillard has 6 receptions for 82 yards and 3 TD catches.  SO James Casey from Azle, TX has an average of 6.6 yards per touch and 2 TD’s for Rice.

Bo Levi Mitchell was 22 for 39 for 201 yards and 3 TD’s and 2 INT’s.  SMU WR Aldrich Robinson has 7 receptions for 91 yards and 2 TD’s.

Live Blogging: Thomas Morstead is Awesome

Thomas Morstead is averaging 46.5 yards per punt.  He just hit a 57 yarder.  He has 3 punts that is 50 plus yards and one that was placed inside the 20 yard line.  SMU seems to be winning in the special teams department.

Live Blogging: Logan Turner in the Game

After two interceptions, the Ponies decided to try Redshirt Freshman Logan Turner who finished the Spring practice as number one on the depth chart.  Apparently, it was for just one play.  Mitchell is back in the game.  It seems Mitchell wasn’t ready for some reason, and Turner volunteered to hand off the ball.

Live Blogging: Rice is Pulling Away

After a Bo Levi Mitchell interception, Rice has taken a 42-20 lead.  They used versatile James Casey from Azle, TX to take the snap at QB from the 1 yard line and sweep into the end zone with about 8:30 left in the 3rd Quarter.  With a weak defense it is a lot to ask a Freshman QB to keep up with Senior QB Clase Clement and company.  Clement has accounted for 316 total yards and 5 TD passes.

Now, at 7:31 minutes left in the 3rd Quarter, Rice’s Andrew Sendejo intercepts another Mitchell pass and returns it for a TD making the score 49-20.  It might be a long 4th Quarter!

Live Bloggin: Rice 28, SMU 13

Rice missed two field goals, but scored 4 straight TD’s to take a halftime lead of 28-13.  Chase Clement has been really good with 276 total yards and 4 TD passes.  On the other side, Bo Levi Mitchell has passed for 155 yards and 2 TD’s.  SMU’s defense had a great at the end of the half holding Rice to a FG try which they missed with no time remaining.

Live Blogging: It’s All Chase

With about 4 minutes left in the first half, Rice’s Chase Clement is making a it all count.  Clement has 242 total yards (50 yds. rush) and 4 TD passes.  SMU is struggling to show Rice’s offense down.  The score is Rice 28 and SMU 13.  Bo Levi Mitchell has done pretty well so far.  He is 16-25 with 2 TD passes.  So far, it seems as if Rice has more firepower on offense than SMU which doesn’t look good if they want to stay with Rice.
