Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. . . or behind the BCS polls at least

BCS 2010 Logo

Author: Daniel Durany

The Bowl Championship Series is broken down into three components (Harris Poll, USA Today Poll, & the six computer polls) to determine the two teams playing for the national championship. If these are the components that breakdown the BCS, then the typical questions from the majority of college fans would be what are the six computer rankings, who are the people from the Harris Poll, & which coaches are from the USA Today Coaches Poll? Out of three components, the six computer polls is the only component that doesn’t play any bias factors, provides tons of math equations, no influence on opinions or assumptions, or margin of victory. Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Jeff Sagarin, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Massey, & Dr. Peter Wolfe are the six computer polls who provide a major significance in determining the two teams playing for the national championship.

Top Ten Things I’m Thankful for Part II

continued form part I

Conway

I moved to Conway, AR this past year. Have you heard of it? It’s claim to fame, right now, is American Idol winner Kris Allen. They love Kris! However, this town has so much more! Kris is a product of this town, a town of talented, creative and honest people. There are three, very good, colleges here and, I think that adds to the productivity of this bustling city.

Coffee

I need it, and I love it. Computer programmers, website designers and many others depend on the boost they get from coffee, and there is nothing better, it seems, when it is a fresh cup of recently roasted coffee from an independent coffee shop. I have two that I love. Caffe di Angeli in Fort Worth, TX and Guillermo’s in Little Rock, AR. Otherwise, I just go to Starbucks.

Income

Income is great! It helps us pay for bills and buy Christmas presents. It’s easier to get by when you have one!

Christmas/Fall

Unequivocally, it’s my favorite time of the year. I love the Folger’s commercial of the guy coming home from college or wherever, and making the coffee to which everyone wakes up to. I don’t care much for Folders, but the commercial embodies the holidays. . . . . families being together.

Computers

I may love computers too much, but I am making up for not being near computers for nearly 25 years. Of course I was near computers, but not to the extent that today’s society demands. I didn’t own a computer, but I can make wonderful use of a computer now. I build websites, I search for information, I edit pictures, and I can make purchases. It is the backbone of my livelihood.

Art

I still have the appreciation for art. I draw on computers, mostly, now. I can still remember all of the drawing I did as a kid, and I realize I should probably do a little more of that as a stress reliever. I am still inspired by my high school art teacher, Aline McCracken. She is still an active artist 20 years later! Sometimes, she shares with her Facebook friends. I am honored!

Basics

There are basics to life. Water, air, a place to sleep, all those things. I have them, and I am grateful. I am even grateful for my 1996 Ford Taurus which I had to have in the shop this past week. I would consider that a basic, though I know it’s not really a basic. Mostly, I am thankful to have a place to sleep and that it is inside!

Remember, feel free to share your top ten things you are thankful for in the comments box!
Happy Thanksgiving from CFTT!

Top Ten Things I’m Thankful for Part I

It is a tradition at CFTT. I list the top ten things I am thankful for. So, here is my list. Feel free to create your own and include it in the comments.

By the way, this is in no particular order.

Family

If you don’t have a good family, I am sorry. Mine isn’t perfect, but they have proven much in the past year. I am glad to be near them again and get be a part of the lives of my nephew and two nieces. The holiday season will be much better this year!

Churchonechurch logo

I could include my faith here, but it is strained at the time being. It is church that keeps me from falling away. The folks at the church where I am a member embrace me and help me to hang on. Most churches are like this, but, as churches, we need to be more loving to our own and accept that life is hard for our members and we just need to be hugged! And loved.

Friends

Sometimes I complain that I don’t have any. I do. There are different kinds. There are friends from Texas where I lived for 13 years. There are new friends in Conway, AR, where I live now. There are friends from high school and college and there are “virtual friend” from my social networking online.

From Texas, there are friends like Lester Meriwether and Alex Martinez. Lester runs a faith-based literacy education ministry. He is a terrific example of a friend who cares for others as well as his wonderful family.

Alex is a salesman, but don’t let the fool you. He is an honest guy who cares for his family, his church and his friends. He and his wife Diana are big supporters of their church as well as the DFW Avengers semi-pro football team.

I have reconnected with old friends from my hometown like Robert Treadway. In spite of his struggles the past 20+ years, Robert is making his way and poised to write some future country hits. His tenacity is contagious.

I have new friends like Cotton Rohrschieb and the guys at Conway Co-Work. I look up to them in design techniques and value their friendship. Cotton isn’t just a great website designer, but he is also the “life of the party.” I don’t know anyone who has as many funny stories (usually of himself!) to tell at a moment’s notice.

Finally, there are my “virtual friends” such as John Boehler. John runs the Nebraska Sports Journal. He is an avid reader, a man of faith, a father and a huge sports fan, especially in all things Nebraska related. I have enjoyed knowing John throughout the past couple of years.

Part II is tomorrow

6.  Wisconsin

7.  Stanford

Foreigner won week 6, and he has returned to win week 12.  Congratulations Foreigner!

There is only two weeks left, and the top three competitors have separated themselves.  AL’s picks, Cards Nest and leecoke’s picks are within seven points of each other.  Grayhound and georghr3′s picks are lagging 13 points behind the leader.
